Cancer survivors being sought as volunteers
CHAMPAIGN – Nobody understands better what it's like to be diagnosed with breast cancer than a breast cancer survivor.
And the American Cancer Society needs a lot of survivor volunteers to help the approximately 8,800 women and 60 men in Illinois expected to have been diagnosed with breast cancer by the end of this year.
Volunteers would be working with the cancer society's Reach to Recovery service, in which survivors help provide hope, support and information to newly diagnosed patients.
The American Cancer Society has been matching patients and survivors through this program since 1969. Volunteers receive training and are matched with patients based on the similarity of cancer diagnosis and experience, their age, background and availability, the cancer society says.
The next Reach to Recovery certification workshop is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 14 at Carle Physicians Clinic, 200 Lerna Road, Mattoon.
Prospective volunteers who would like to attend the training session are asked to call Angela Wenthe or Pam Barak at the American Cancer Society at 356-9076 or send an e-mail to angela.wenthe<@>cancer.org or pam.barak<@>cancer.org.
Are you the survivor of another kind of cancer and still want to help? The cancer society can also provide information about Support to Recovery, another program that provides peer-to-peer support for all other types of cancer.
