New Georgetown City Council member takes his seat
GEORGETOWN – City officials seated Adam Hart on the city council on Monday, filling the chair left vacant by Alderman Gary LaMar's resignation.
Hart, 28, said he lived on the city's southwest side and works for Hart Construction of nearby Olivet. He said he had no previous political experience, but was approached by Alderman Tom Seilhymer about serving on the city council.
"I'll just try to do my best at this," Hart said.
Mayor Dennis Lucas said he had hoped that a young member of the community would express an interest in the vacant council seat. He said he met with Hart and was impressed with his interest in city government.
"I think he will do a fine job," Lucas said.
Hart fills the seat left vacant by LaMar's resignation. LaMar, a retiree from General Motors Powertrain in Tilton, was himself appointed to fill a vacant seat on the city council in February 2002.
LaMar had not attended a full council meeting since June and was removed as chairman of the personnel committee in August because Lucas said he was unable to take care of his duties as chairman.
The seat now held by Hart will come up for election in the spring.
In other business, the council voted to give all three full-time office workers in city hall a 50-cent hourly wage increase, retroactive to May 1.
The council also voted to replace all four tires on the streets and alleys department's 1994 pickup truck. Watson General Tire of Danville will replace the tires at a total cost of about $675.
