'Rhinoceros' director puts out call to artists in area
URBANA – The director of the upcoming production of "Rhinoceros" by Eugene Ionesco at the Station Theatre has put out a call for artists to draw rhinoceros heads for the production.
Director Eric Burton said the play has a scene in which the stage is overrun by rhinoceroses; he would like to use rhino drawings by local artists for that scene.
"The rendering need only be of the rhinoceros head but can portray more of the body if the artist so chooses," Burton said via e-mail. "What is important is that the image be on a white background, close to life-size, with the profile of the head being 24 to 36 inches from crown of head to mouth."
The drawings may be in any medium. The last day to submit them is Nov. 20. The Station might have to alter drawings in minor ways for the sake of functionality, but all the pieces will be returned at the end of the show's run in the best condition possible, Burton said.
Contributing artists will be recognized in the program and receive a free ticket to a performance of the show, which will run Jan. 14-30, 2010. They will still have to make reservations by calling 384-4000.
For more information about submitting a rhino drawing, contact Burton at 412-9691 or by e-mail at DriveByArt@gmail.com.
