Cause unknown for fire that hit Rantoul home
RANTOUL — The cause is still unknown for a fire that caused an estimated $50,000 in damage to a Rantoul home.
Rantoul firefighters, assisted by firefighters from Thomasboro, were called to the blaze at 1228 E. Grove Ave. in Rantoul Wednesday afternoon.
The house is owned and occupied by Joseph Parham.
Rantoul Fire Chief Ken Waters said his department received the call about 4:39 p.m.
The house is across the street from Maple Grove Shopping Center.
When firefighters arrived, flames were showing from the west side and in the attic of the wood frame one-story home. Smoke was coming from all the eaves around the house.
Firefighters cut a hole in the roof to ventilate the attic.
“There was lots of roof damage, hardwood floor damage, and the siding was damaged,” Waters said.
The fire also spread to the roof of an attached garage, which housed three vehicles and a motorcycle, all of which sustained soot damage. Waters was uncertain whether the vehicles had additional damage.
Waters said the fire was under control by 5 p.m., and firefighters remained on the scene until 6:38 p.m.
The fire remains under investigation. Cause of the blaze is undetermined, according to Waters.
