No one injured in fire at North Prospect Burger King
CHAMPAIGN – The Burger King on North Prospect Avenue in Champaign won't re-open until inspections by city and public health officials following a Tuesday afternoon fire.
Champaign Fire Department spokeswoman Dena Schumacher said firefighters were called to the restaurant at 2110 N. Prospect Ave. at 1:04 p.m. Tuesday.
According to a fire department report, the restaurant manager was taking trash out when he noticed black smoke flowing from the roof.
The manager ran inside to the broiler area of the kitchen and saw a fire. He dialed 911 to report it and coordinated the evacuation of the restaurant. Schumacher said 13 employees and 20 customers got out safely and no injuries were reported. Schumacher said the fire was also reported by a customer walking out of the Target store.
When firefighters arrived five minutes later, they found smoke coming from a vent system on the roof.
Firefighters had the fire under control within 10 minutes and began to leave the scene by 1:24 p.m.
Schumacher said city fire investigators were looking into the cause of the fire.
Schumacher estimated damage to the building at $10,000. She said it would be a few days before repairs are done and city and public health officials complete an inspection so the restaurant can reopen.
