Description:
East Central LEAP (Linking Educators And Parents) is a study group of the Illinois Branch of the International Dyslexia Association. Program, "The Rise of Image over the Word" by Nan Goggin, Director of the School of Art and Design. Whether you come as a parent, teacher, psychologist, administrator or social worker, you will find this presentation will help provide a better understanding of ways to deal with different styles of learning and ways to take advantage of the current rise of image over word in our culture. Goggin will share information about the way memory for images can be stronger than the memory for words. She will describe how the rapid recall and processing of images that many students possess can also provide for unusual success in students who may be slow readers. In today's culture these skills can place students with signs of dyslexia at a distinct advantage even if they choose a profession in academia. Nan will share her own story as she moved toward a career in academia and became a full professor and then the director of the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois. Nan is a parent who understands the child who may need a different way of learning. Time for parents and educators in the study group to ask questions and share their own observations. Free. CPDU credits for educators. Call Marilyn Kay, LEAP Coordinator, 367-0398, or e-mail mfkay@sbcglobal.net for more information. For more information:
