Where:

Parkland College Art Gallery, 2400 W. Bradley Ave., Champaign

When:

Various dates from Monday, Jun 29, 2009, to Tuesday, Aug 11, 2009

Description:

Illinois artist Michael Hoag brings us complex portraits in a colorful summer exhibit, June 29 to Aug. 11. Reception: July 9, 6 to 8 p.m., gallery lounge, with artist's gallery talk at 7 p.m. and music by Jordan Kaye. Summer art exhibit to feature complex portraits. Hoag's art pieces for this show combine explosive symmetrical lines of intense color with an organic softer portrait floating on the surface of the canvas. The jumbled lines of the first layer add a chaotic edge to the image, while the portrait adds an organic note to the abstract lines and colors. This tension infuses the imagery with a complexity that blurs our selective perception and represents the push and pull between order and chaos that Hoag seeks to embed within his portraiture. Free and open to the public. Parkland Art Gallery summer hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. To find the gallery when classes are in session, use the M6 parking lot on north corner of campus. Enter through any door and follow the ramps uphill to the highest point of the first floor, where the gallery is located. The gallery windows overlook the outdoor fountain area.
