Jesus Did What?

For reasons beyond my control I was up a bit early this morning. I was flipping through the channels. We don't have cable so it doesn't take long to get through them all. On the religious channel 3abn there was a guy talking about the end of the world.I was half listening and half looking through a cookbook but stopped reading when my husband's (Catholic) head whipped around. The guy started in on how the Catholic Church is taking on the mark of the beast because they force people to go to church on Sunday. After a series of similar claims he said, "I have Catholic friends and they can tell you I'm not a Catholic basher."
The main claim was that we need to go to church on Saturday or we are ignoring the commandments and possibly going to hell. Though the word hell was not used the mark of the beast is one sure way to get there. I cite the last part of the Bible on that one.
While this had all been pretty entertaining we were laughing out loud a few minutes later. The guy provided us with the gem of the day and maybe even the week. Did you know Jesus created the sabbath? I didn't. Guess you can learn things from watching TV.
I'm sure he's got a lot of Jewish friends too.
And no this isn't an April fools joke. I wish it were.
Comments
Yes, in the Christian faith, Jesus did create the Sabbath. Consider John 1: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. / Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made." (Subsequent verses make clear that "The Word" means Jesus.)
I'm not defending the TV preacher -- he may very well have been an idiot, I don't know.
I do know that you present yourself poorly in this blog entry -- if you had excercised more understanding and compassion and less redicule and sarcasm, I think you'd have provided a more interesting read.

Amen now this is reporting the turth. Sat is the ture day of worship of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now where in the bible does it say to worship on the first day of the week. It is also true of what 3ABN is preaching. The early Catholic and the founder of the Cathlic church was a sun worshiper they worship the sun in the sky and not the Son of God. So by this they turned their backs on God. 3abn is the only christen channle that preaches the turth about the mark of the beast and the Sabbath.

I understand the trinitarian concepts involved in defending what the man said. I get it, but in addition to the unity of the three parts there is also a distinctive difference.
God saw fit to use three forms instead of one I think that is significant and shouldn't be ignored. Think if someone were to say "the Holy Spirit was born of the Virgin Mary." While the trinity is an important aspect of the faith the comment destroyed the credibility of the entire message.
As for my expression I'm pretty content with it. The lack of understanding of scripture, lack compassion and tolerance for other denominations, and complete disregard for the Jewish faith and traditions is on the speaker.
I could have posted on this in a variety of ways, but I choose to find the humor in the situation.

My husband, a Catholic Christian, would like to know your source on the sun worshiping founder of the Catholic church.

I don't make that remark about my husband being a catholic. I don't who put my name on it. My husband isn't a christen. He has only been inside of a church once. So please pray for him. When God created the world there was no Jews. The Sabbath was made by God before the jewish people was named. The bible also said that Jesus came to not change the law but too full fill them. He even rested on the sabbath while even in the grave. He roused on the first day of the week. It doesn't tell us to worshop on that day. Jesus kept the Sabbath even in the tumb.

Sheila/res0a47:
When someone types your user name in the beginning of a comment it means they are directing the comment toward you. At the bottom of the comment it says "Posted by McBloggy on April 1..."
I was asking you a question. What is your source on sun worshiping founder of the catholic church?
I know my bible pretty well. Raised in a fundamentalist Baptist church I spent a lot of time reading the word. I don't claim that Saturday isn't the sabbath according to the Bible. My family, and most church goers, tend to attend church on Sunday because that's when the doors are open.
The point I was bringing attention to was the speaker's flub/mistake/ignorance (what it was I can't be sure) about Biblical history. I was also trying to, with my admittedly sarcastic sense of humor, make light of what I consider to be a major human failing. When we believe something we often feel compelled to attack others beliefs to validate our own.
The Jesus creating the sabbath comment was something I found funny the same way I enjoy typos in the newspaper and the president's mispronunciation of words. It speaks to a larger credibility issue when someone teaching about the history of the church makes a mistake like that. I would argue that even a kid in Sunday school would have laughed at that blunder.

Ok I am sorry No my husband isn't a catholic. His name was Constantine: Founder of the Catholic Church? He is the one who changed the worship from Sat. to Sun. he didn't want to worship with the jewish. Like I said in my first letter that there was no Jewsish people when God created the Sabbath He rested after creating the world. 6 days thy will labler and the 7th day shall rest, for God created 7 day sabbath and hollowed it. Here is another fact about the sabbath.
Sabbath: God's Gift to Mankind
Does it make any difference which day we observeor whether we even keep one at all? Does the Bible establish Sunday as the Lord's day? Was the Sabbath given for the Jewish people onlywhile Christians are commanded to keep Sunday as the Lord's Day?
Without a doubt, most professing Christians accept Sunday as the New Testament Lord's Day. Muslims observe Friday. Some religions observe no day. But there are those who insist the seventh-day Sabbath is still binding. Few take the Sabbath seriouslyin fact, the vast majority of Christians have never looked into this question. Most never question Sunday-observance, unwittingly following the traditions of men rather than the clear command of God!
Few people realize that the Sabbath vs. Sunday controversy raged during the first three centuries of the Christian era, and millions were tortured and put to death over this question under the Emperor Constantine. If so many chose death over observing a day not commanded by God, could not this dispute be more significant than we may have thought?
What does the Bible really say about the Sabbath? It is generally assumed that Sunday is the correct day. Is it possible that all of these churches are wrong on this fundamental doctrine? And, after all, does it make any difference? Do we not have to adjust our religion to the changing times? Was not the lawincluding the Sabbath"nailed to the cross" when Christ died? What about scriptures like Galatians 4:10 or Colossians 2:16do they not prove that it does not matter which day we keep? Was not Christ resurrected on Sunday, thus His day is the "Lord's Day?"

Sheila,
Clearly we're having some communication issues. The question I'm asking you is: Where are you getting your information? You must have heard this somewhere either from someone personally, on TV, or through reading on the internet or in a book. Where did you hear this?
I highly doubt you have intentions that are anything but honest and good, but I have to tell you how misinformed you are. Constantine did not found the Catholic church. If you want to learn about the origins of the Catholic church stop into any of the local parishes and I'm sure someone will be glad to sit down and talk with you. They will tell you that St. Peter founded the church, but when it comes down to it (and this is my thought process here) Jesus/God founded not only the Catholic church but the Baptist, Methodist, Mennonite, Lutheran and any other Christ based church you can think of.
I actually found myself so frustrated and baffled as to how to respond to such a claim that I sat down and had a talk with a local priest. I was concerned because while I feel compelled to defend the faith of someone I care about and a church that I have a great deal of respect for, I'm not Catholic. I don't have the knowledge to properly represent views that aren't my own.
I was hoping to get some ideas of reading materials to suggest or a better understanding of why someone would make such a claim. The only reading suggested was the Bible and the reasons for such claims are pretty varied. We had sort of a long talk. I could go into the entire conversation, but that would be way too much typing to fit in during my daughter's nap.
While our conversation covered a lot about the history of the church, Constantine's willingness to let people worship, the need people have for proof (something discussed in church last week in reference to doubting Thomas), and the influence of popular fiction works that are taken as fact, one thing was made clear to me.
The only thing asked of me was to keep in mind charity, charity, charity. In other words, be nice. So I'm trying to be nice, but seriously? This sun worshiping stuff is so far from true it's ridiculous. I'm not trying to step on your beliefs. My complaint is that the speaker on 3abn wouldn't carry much weight if I were. Just know that if you want to learn the truth I would say you need to spend some time in prayer and be careful where you take your information from. The internet is an amazing tool, but using legitimate sources is key.

Ok I did alot of reading and reserach on the Sabbath. I also looked in the bible and I couldn't find where God changed the day of worship. Has for Constantin I also looked it up and it says he was the founder of the RCC. I looked this up on the internet and I went and talked with a Sabbath keeping pastor amd a Sunday pastor. the Sabbath keeping pastor made more since than what the other one did. Couldn't ansure my quiesten. So I am now a Bible Sabbath keeper. Deuteronomy 7:4,Ezekiel 8:16 (King James Version)
King James Version (KJV)
Public Domain
16And he brought me into the inner court of the LORD's house, and, behold, at the door of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, were about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east.
I am sure if you have Concordance or go to bible.org you can look up anything that is in the bible. If you want to talk with a Sabbath keeping pastor you can call the Park Ave. Seventh-day Adventist church. If there is no one there they will return your call. Just don't take my word for it do the research for yourself. There is all kinds of info. http://www.amazingfact.org, or bibleuniverseuniversity.com or org. or ssnet. I am not puting not church down that isn't my job. God bless

Sheila,
Okay. One more time and I will stop beating my head against the wall on this.
From what source, meaning exactly what authority on the Catholic church, are you quoting when you say Constantine founded the Catholic church?
Wherever that source originates does it make sense to you that this person/organization knows more about the origins of the Catholic church than the Catholic church does itself? I would say not.
Again, I do not take issue with the day the bible describes as being the sabbath. I don't however, think there is any sort of plot or conspiracy to undermine God by Christians that go to church on Sunday.
I would argue that Christians of any creed are in fact Christians. Arguing (as a Christian) that they aren't, insinuating that any denomination is against God, or attacking other faiths because they don't worship exactly the way you do isn't just unkind or well, let's face it dumb, it's unchristian.
That was my issue with the speaker. I decided to laugh at his blunder because it is easier for me to do that than try to comprehend how making those assertions could ever be considered a ministry.
Again, none of what I've said here is arguing against your beliefs. Worship on Saturday, Sunday, or Tuesday I don't care. I care when someone like the speaker on 3abn starts insinuating that millions of people devoted to the same God he worships are going to hell because they do so on a different day than he does. In matters of faith it's easy to get emotional and defensive and hard to remember that we're all on the same journey even if we take different paths.
